Sukanto Tanoto - On The Growth Path Again
Today, Mr. Tanoto's business operations encompass China, Indonesia, Brazil, Malaysia and the Philippines. His companies have sales offices on 4 continents, employ 50,000 people worldwide and have assets worth US$8 billion. The five business groups each operate independently, with its own holding company and board of directors responsible for the operations of that group. Asia Pacific Resources Holdings International Ltd (APRIL) is one of the world's largest fiber, pulp and paper producers. Its pulp mill in Kerinci on Indonesia's Riau Province has reached a capacity of over 2 million tons per annum, and its paper mill, 800,000 tons per annum. It has started to expand its operations in China and embarked on its Phase II project to build a 1 million ton bleached kraft pulp line in Rizhao, Shandong in China.
Sateri Interational Group is also expanding to triple its pulp mill capacity in Brazil to 365,000 tons per annum. Its viscose fiber mill in Jiangxi, China is also expanding to build a differential viscose stable fiber line with capacity of 60,000 tons per annum which upon completion will bring the total capacity of Sateri (Jiangxi) to 130,000 tons per annum.
Pacific Oil & Gas is currently the operator of the Perlak and Kisaran Blocks in Sumatra, Indonesia, and is also constructing an LNG Receiving Terminal in Rudong, Jiangsu, and a wholly-owned Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant in Xiamen, Fujian in China.
Asian Agri is a member of Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) since February 2006. It is actively implementing RSPO Principles and Criteria throughout its supply chain towards production of Sustainable Palm Oil. Its Crude Palm Oil (CPO) refinery in Nanjing, the first one outside of Indonesia, will bring its total number of refineries to 4. It will also add a new kernel crushing plant to its operations.
PEC-Tech continues to extend its expertise in Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), logistics services and development to the pulp & paper, palm oil, rayon, oil & gas and energy sectors.
Mr. Tanoto and his family have also formed the Tanoto Foundation in 2001, with the aim of helping reduce poverty and advancing human achievement. Working primarily in the areas of education, healthcare and disaster relief, the Foundation makes available scholarships to students, provides honorariums to teachers and upgrades their skills, builds schools and supplies equipment and books as well as providing healthcare in remote areas and rapid response assistance in earthquakes and other natural calamities.
The Tanoto Professorship Award also gives out grants to Indonesian researchers which will enable them to continue their respective research programs. The Teacher Training Program trains teachers who then return to their respective schools to impart their new knowledge to their students.
The Tanoto Foundation has also contributed in China and other countries. Besides advocating personal development, Mr Tanoto has also made donations in the areas of education, arts & culture, alleviating poverty and environmental concerns.
